She appreciated his letter. She wrote a Spanish War Poem "Peace Should Not Come". It is coming out in Goodhouse Keeping. She wrote two recent books, "Poems of Problems and Cameo". She composed on the harp "The Dance of the Elves".

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
